Learning @ PACELLI School for the Blind
“Blindness” so wrote the famous writer Villey, “does not impair the intellectual faculties. Blind people…can soar to the height of LEARNING”.
This is the challenge for the blind boys and girls of Pacelli School.
Pupils come from all over Nigeria and beyond, boys and girls who are bright, eager and alert, with a desire to learn and achieve. The track record of our graduates has proved that they can advance side by side with the brightest sighted students in secondary schools, colleges and universities, at home and abroad.
The curriculum is designed to prepare pupils for entry into regular secondary schools. A separate curriculum is also prepared for the pupils who have additional disabilities.
Subjects taught include: Orientation & Mobility training, Braille reading and writing, Typewriting, Computer, Religion, English, Mathematics, Science, Music, Creative Art, Health Education, Physical Education, French & Swimming.
At Pacelli School, education is considered a total experience with dimension far beyond the classroom. The cosmopolitan nature of Lagos provides a cultural storehouse with a wealth of interesting experiences. Our boys and girls get to experience the pulse of a bustling city with a population of 15 million people.
Educational activities include the following areas:
- The Primary School curriculum, which is the same as is used in regular schools;
Rehabilitation introduces the pupils to Braille, reading and writing, Basic English and Mathematics.
Pre-Vocational Unit: This supplement to the primary school programme introduces pupils to basic tie and dye, batik, beadwork, basket, bag, mat & shoe making and sewing.
Special Events are provided for the pupils by our normal staff, voluntary organizations and societies, and include philanthropically organized outings, parties, musical evenings and educational tours. These provide intellectual and artistic stimulation, supplement the classroom curriculum, and provide realistic challenges for the young students.
Happiness is the keynote of the school. The cheery laughter and eager chatter of bright young voices at play fill the school throughout the day and into the evening.
Teaching at Pacelli School presents a social challenge. The old theory is not true that the blind, having lost the sense of sight, develop exceptionally keen other senses. Other senses can and must be sharpened by practice and careful training. The teachers of the blind must be specially qualified to give this important sensory training with UNDERSTANDING – PATIENCE – LOVE.
Instruction at Pacelli School relies on modern techniques such as field trips, debates, and individualized educational programmes. But the greatest tool in the hands of the Blind is BRAILLE. This has opened wide the gates of:
KNOWLEDGE SELF-EXPRESSION ENTERTAINMENT INDEPENDENCE.
